The tribe will have a ground breaking Friday, Oct. 1, for its new skate park at the old police station location in Gilson Wash. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. and there will be free food and music.

To celebrate the new skate park Tribal Chairman Terry Rambler announced the inaugural  Chairman’s Veterans Skate Competition for Nov. 13. There will be men’s and women’s divisions and best trick competitions.

The tribe is spending $337,120 on the 10,000-square-foot skate park, with $287,120 coming from tribal Community Improvement funds and $50,000 from a grant from Freeport-McMoRan.

Start dates of the next phases of the sports complex have not yet been announced, but there is a conceptual drawing of a number of amenities.

Phase two will feature development of four basketball courts, beach volleyball courts, a new Little League field, an office and public restrooms.
