GRAHAM COUNTY — Coronado National Forest-Safford Ranger District officials said on social media Thursday that it appears Swift Trail (State Highway 366) up Mount Graham will re-open May 3.

Plows are removing snow from the roads, while Fire and Recreation staffs work on removing trees at campgrounds and other recreation facilities that fell from the 140-inches of snow that fell on the mountain this year.

Once the roadway is re-opened, district officials are recommending use of four-wheel or all-wheel drive vehicles due to open dirt and muddy road conditions.

The road above Shannon Campground is closed annually due to winter conditions in the higher elevations making driving dangerous.

Typically, the roadway is re-opened in early April, but 36-inches of snow fell on the mountain in March, delaying the roadway’s re-opening.
