Law enforcement cracking down on impaired drivers

SAFFORD —The holidays bring more than one kind of cheer.

And to ensure that people will be around to enjoy their holiday cheer, local law enforcement is conducting DUI saturation patrols through the end of the year.

“A lot of people don’t realize that they’ve become intoxicated. And that’s kind of how alcohol works — it’s not one big go from sober to intoxicated just like that, it’s a gradual thing. And some of the first things to go along the way are good decision making,” said Sgt. Troy Cluff with the Safford Police Department.

Earlier this month, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety awarded the Graham County Sheriff’s Office a $12,899 grant to pay overtime expenses for special projects as it relates to DUI enforcement and other Southeast DUI Task Force events in the amount of, as well as $7,000 for special traffic enforcement.

Area law enforcement is encouraging those who will be imbibing when they’re out to have a designated driver.

Those who do not have access to a designated driver can call Gila Valley Rides rather than get behind the wheel themselves. Gila Valley Rides can be reached at 928-275-2253. Text messages will not be accepted.
