Eastern Arizona College Volleyball is headed back to the NJCAA Division I National Championship after earning an at-large selection, securing the program’s 13th nationals appearance and its third in the last four seasons.
The Gila Monsters reach Clarksville at 24-7 following an undefeated 11-0 ACCAC campaign and a Region 1 championship, part of an 18-match winning streak that stretched from early September to the Rocky Mountain District final. That run ended in a five-set battle with Snow College, the only stumble in a stretch that turned EAC into one of the hottest teams in the country.
Head coach Shari Kay, the ACCAC Division I Coach of the Year, said the team’s path was built months ago.
“I scheduled a tough preseason where we would play nationally ranked teams so we’d be tested early,” Kay said. “We wanted to be ready for the postseason and hopefully earn some strength-of-schedule credit.”
Facing multiple Top 25 opponents in August and early September, the Gila Monsters endured some bumps, but the payoff was clear as the season unfolded.
“Our girls have had such an amazing season,” Kay said. “Showing up night after night and getting the wins. We won the conference, won the region, won 18 straight.”
Still, the district final defeat meant EAC spent the last several days waiting to see if the committee valued their resume the same way they did.
“We had one bad night and still went five with a very tough team,” Kay said. “I had faith the work our girls did would be enough to get an at-large bid. But truly, you never know what the committee will come up with.”
When Eastern Arizona appeared on the bracket, the emotion was immediate.
“Watching the selection show brought out some strong emotions,” Kay said. “We’re beyond excited for the opportunity. I believe it will be one of those situations where the loss was needed and did us some good.”
ACCAC Player of the Year Addison Hinckley, who also earned ACCAC Region 1 Tournament MVP honors, said the moment validated the group’s resilience.
“This team has been through so much together, and to see all that hard work pay off with a trip to nationals means everything,” Hinckley said. “We play for each other, and we can’t wait to represent our program.”
EAC opens the national tournament Wednesday at Austin Peay University in Clarksville, Tennessee, facing a familiar opponent in No. 9 Northeastern Junior College.
Northeastern enters at 32-3 overall, riding a 28-match winning streak and an undefeated 14-0 run through Region IX play. The Plainswomen have not lost since Aug. 23, the second week of the season.
The matchup is also a rematch of their early-season meeting in Roswell, New Mexico, where Northeastern edged Eastern Arizona 3-2 on Aug. 23. It remains one of only two five-set losses EAC suffered all season.
Northeastern’s resume includes wins over Idaho powerhouse CSI, Salt Lake, Utah State Eastern, Casper, and multiple Region IX contenders. They swept through their regional tournament as well, including a 3-0 win over Casper in the championship round.
The Gila Monsters face Northeastern at 6 p.m. MST on Wednesday in the opening round of the NJCAA Division I Championship.
