Law enforcement and firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at about 5:41 AM last Saturday on Clay Knolls, south of the Safford Cemetery. The vehicle was found on its side and burning on the southwest side of the knoll. Safford fire arrived and put out the blaze.
Authorities didn’t find anybody with the vehicle when they arrived, but they did find some shoe prints. Deputies were not able to find any record of stolen vehicles reported within the past few days. The rear bumper was found on the southwest side of the knoll and the front bumper was found on the west side of the hill. The license plate was next to the vehicle but was burned and not readable.
Authorities found the name and address of the owner from the VIN on the vehicle. Initial efforts to contact the owner were unsuccessful and the incident remains under investigation.
