SAFFORD — The City of Safford is getting serious about a new park.

The city announced it is accepting requests for qualifications to begin design work for the proposed park at Discovery Park Boulevard and 8th Avenue, just to the west of Safford Cemetery.

The proposed park is about 15 acres and the design must include an amphitheater, splash pad, four pickleball courts, playground equipment and a zipline. It must also incorporate the existing multi-use path.

The list of suggested but not required amenities includes: space for food trucks; gazebos, ramadas and picnic areas; workout stations; space for people to bring their own bag games (i.e., cornhole); and a decorative water feature.

Interested firms may ask questions until Jan. 17, 2023, with Jan. 24 the final day to submit proposals.

The city has budgeted $2.4 million for development of the park, with almost all of the money coming from federal American Rescue Plan Act funding.
