FLAGSTAFF — A new poll shows a Democrat leading in a heavily Republican district.

Emerson College released a number of polls Thursday, including a poll for Congress in Arizona’s Second District, which includes the San Carlos Apache Reservation .

The poll shows Democratic challenger Jonathan Nez up 50-48 over incumbent Republican Eli Crane. Emerson College ranks the race a dead heat, as the spread falls within the margin of error.

Republicans hold a 60,000 registered voters advantage over Democrats in AZ-2, which includes all of Apache, Coconino, Gila, Navajo and Yavapai counties, and parts of Graham, Maricopa, Mohave and Pinal. Republicans are at 213,182 while Democrats are at 153,079.

However, the district has 172,519 independent voters, just 41,000 fewer than registered Republicans.

Also on Thursday, the election model predictor Poliwave is forecasting a 2-point win for Democratic challenger JoAnna Mendoza over Republican incumbent Juan Ciscomani in the race for Congress in Arizona’s Sixth District.

AZ-6 includes all of Greenlee County and parts of Cochise, Graham, Pima and Pinal.

Republicans again hold a significant advantage over Democrats when it comes to registered voters in AZ-6, with Republicans at 190,536 to 161,699 for Democrats. But again independents make up a significant voting block, with 183,084 registered voters in AZ-6 picking neither party.
