PIMA — The Town of Pima has a new committee with the goal of spreading a little kindness throughout the community.

The Community Kindness Project met for the first time Thursday.

“I’m hoping maybe we can change that attitude of people that come here, that they’ll feel like they’re part of the community,” said Rusty Draper. “All people, no matter what race, religion or creed they are. Maybe we can do better.”

To engage residents as well as visitors to Pima from the other parts of the Gila Valley, the committee discussed holding a new kick-off event — a swap meet on the high school football field on May 1.

That same day, residents will be able to take a tour of the new building being constructed by the school district, as well as participate in tree planting in celebration of Arbor Day.

Other ideas suggested included improving the signs into town and reaching out to the community through social media, the electric signs at the school and the co-op, and through radio.

The committee’s mission statement is: “Striving to establish a community spirit that is family- and business-friendly through cooperation and kindness.”

The committee will meet the second Thursday of each month at Pima Town Hall and anyone interested in creating a kinder town and Valley is welcome to attend.
