Multiple fatalities in 25-vehicle pileup on I-10

Freeway traffic rerouted along U.S. Highway 191 and U.S. Highway 70 through Safford and Duncan

LORDSBURG, NEW MEXICO – A 25-vehicle pileup early Monday evening on Interstate 10 near Lordsburg, N.M., resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.

The crash also closed I-10 in both directions at about 5 p.m., with eastbound traffic diverted along U.S. Highway 70 through Safford and onto U.S. Highway 70 through Duncan and westbound traffic diverted at Lordsburg the opposite way along U.S. Highway 70 and then U.S. Highway 191. The detour is approximately 105 miles long. 

Reportedly, 18 commercial vehicles and seven cars were involved in the crash, which was caused by blowing dust from high winds that went through the area. 

Eastbound lanes were reopened at 2:30 a.m. and westbound lanes were reopened at 6 a.m.
