Facebook scam hits the Gila Valley

SAFFORD —Two Safford residents reported being the victims of online scams.

The first victim contacted Safford Police to report she was out $2,000 due to a Facebook hack. The victim said she was contacted by Facebook Messenger by a person she believed was a friend, who reported a HUD loan was available.

The victim said that seemed reasonable, given their relationship, so she provided the financial information requested. At that point the scammer cut off contact.

The victim reached out to her friend, who explained she had nothing to do with the request, and it was determined the friend’s Facebook account had been hacked.

The second victim reported to police his handicapped wife had been “seduced” by someone online, who convinced her to make available access to the couple’s bank account information, as well as financial information for the business where the victim works.

The banks of the victim and the business were able to reverse the transactions.

In both cases, there are no suspects.
