SAFFORD — Even with lowering the property tax rate for the second year in a row, Graham County Supervisor Danny Smith said the county has a number of improvement projects planned for the coming year, including improvements at the fairgrounds.

“We are putting the rubberized flooring at the playground structure out there. That’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and we’re pleased to get that done,” Smith said.

Other fairgrounds improvements this year include lights for Field 1, repairing the nearly two-dozen inoperable drinking fountains, adding fans inside buildings as well as painting upgrades and a number of landscaping projects.

Smith said residents will also be able to see the existing fields become more lush once Safford runs lines for treated effluent water to the fairgrounds, under an agreement between the county and the city.

“We’ll see more concentrated green space,” he said. “The parts that are supposed to be green, we hope will be greener and of better quality. That’s my goal; to provide the best recreation facility for our kids that we can.”

At Graham County Courthouse, Smith said work this year will focus on improving lighting in the building as well as remodeling the restrooms. Next year, the county plans to replace the windows, give the building a fresh coat of paint and improve the steps on the south side of the building.
