DPS helicopter rescues two Safford men in the Galiuros

MAMMOTH — A pair of Graham County men who attempted to drive through the Galiuro Mountains Saturday had to be rescued by helicopter.

Graham County Dispatch was notified at 5:45 p.m. by the brother of one of the two men, who said the vehicle the men were using was stuck in the rocks in the area of Aravaipa Canyon and Turkey Creek.

As Graham County Search and Rescue was being called out, it was determined the men, who were from Safford and attempting to drive to Mammoth, were actually in Pinal County.

Pinal County Sheriff’s Office called for its Search and Rescue team, but there were two other searches already underway in Pinal County, so Graham County deputies reached out to Arizona Department of Public Safety for a helicopter search.

DPS Ranger 1 helicopter spotted the men just before 9 p.m., landed to pick them up, and flew them to the Safford Airport where Graham County Search and Rescue picked them up for transport to their homes.

Neither man reported any injuries.
