FORT THOMAS — The Safford Lions Club, Southeastern Arizona Clean and Beautiful and the Graham County Stars are asking the public to join with them for a community beautification project.
The groups will conduct a cleanup of the Melvin Jones Memorial, on U.S. Highway 70 in Fort Thomas, on Saturday, Aug. 28, from 6-9 a.m.
Those wishing to volunteer should bring water, hats and sunscreen. Gloves, vests and garbage bags will be provided.
The founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, was born in Fort Thomas in 1879. The club he founded in 1917, after moving to Chicago, has become the largest service organization in the world, with 1.4 members in more than 200 countries.
The memorial was designed by Safford Lions Club member Roger David and dedicated June 27, 1965.
