SAFFORD, AZ — The Safford Unified School District issued a statement Thursday regarding an incident at Safford High School, involving an individual who allegedly falsely identified themselves as a probation officer and was later found to be carrying a concealed weapon.
The individual arrived at Safford High School for a previously scheduled meeting with the principal. The individual followed established school security procedures and was allowed into the school office for the meeting.
The district said that after additional information became known, school staff and the school resource officer took action. The SRO determined the individual was carrying a concealed weapon and escorted the individual out of the school office and off campus.
According to the district, the individual was never permitted to enter the main school building or access confidential student information. The district also said no threats were made against students or staff and the situation remained calm.
The matter is now being handled by the Safford Police Department through the appropriate legal process. SUSD is cooperating with police and praised the response of school staff and the school resource officer, saying established safety protocols were followed.
“The safety and wellbeing of our students remains our number one priority,” district officials said in a posting to social media.
