Winter Sports: How to qualify for the playoffs

Much like the Fall sports season, each conference has adjusted the minimum number of games to play to qualify for the winter tournaments. The dates for the playoffs for each local conference have been posted as well. The first power points will be posted February 11th. Below you will see all of the information that is available at this time for each conference.

3A Conference(Thatcher,Safford)

Basketball: 3A (16-team bracket): In order to qualify, a school must have scheduled a minimum of 10 games. Based on region standings, the top team in each region will earn an automatic bid to the state tournament bracket. 3A Conference leadership will determine the nine (9) teams that will be selected at-large for the state tournament. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and be single elimination.

The 3A basketball playoff dates have been set as well. The tournament will be played at the higher seed until the Championship game that will take place at Coronado High School for both boys and girls on March 20th.

Soccer: 3A: (16-team bracket): In order to qualify, a school must have played a minimum of eight (8) games. Based on region standings, the top team in each region will earn an automatic bid at minimum to the conference play-in tournament. The conference play-in tournament will match up teams ranked No. 9 through No. 24. Teams ranked No. 1 through No. 8, along with the eight winning teams from the conference play-in tournament, will make up the 16-team state tournament. The state tournament bracket will be seeded according to the overall ranking of the 16 teams. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and be single elimination.

Wrestling (Safford):

The Division III sectional tournament is scheduled for March 13th at a to be determined location. The State Tournament will take place Thursday, March 18th, at Poston Butte High School and will feature 16 wrestlers in a double elimination format.

2A Conference(Pima,Morenci)

Basketball: 2A (16-team bracket): In order to qualify, a school must have played a minimum of eight (8) games. Based on region standings the top two teams in each region will earn an automatic bid at minimum to the conference play-in tournament. The conference play-in tournament will match up teams ranked No. 9 through No. 24. Teams ranked No. 1 through No. 8, along with the eight winning teams from the conference play-in tournament, will make up the 16-team state tournament. The state tournament bracket will be seeded according to overall ranking of the 16 teams. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and be single elimination.

Unlike the 3A Conference who is using a human element to their seedings, the 2A is using only the power point rankings to seed their tournaments. The 2A will also have a play in tournament and will boys and girls state games will be played on the same day.

Wrestling (Division IV): There will be no sectional tournament in Division IV this year. The state tournament will take place over two days, March 16 and 17, at Poston Butte High School.

1A Conference (Fort Thomas, Duncan)

The 1A Conference will only use a human element to seed their tournaments, making them the only conference to not use the power points at all.

Basketball: 1A (16-team bracket): In order to qualify, a school must have scheduled a minimum of 10 games and played each regional opponent. The top three (3) teams in each of the four (4) regions will receive an automatic bid to the state tournament. The remaining four (4) at-large bids will be determined by, and the state tournament bracket will be seeded by, 1A Conference leadership. The state tournament will consist of four rounds and be single elimination.
