THATCHER — The call is going out for volunteers for two different service projects.
The organizers bringing the Moving Vietnam Wall to Thatcher later this month are asking for help when the wall opens to the public.
“We need volunteers to help make the visits more personal, meaningful and comfortable. You know, we want to provide comfort and emotional support to the visitors. And to help visitors find names by using the directory,” said Bob Rivera, who spearheaded bringing the wall to Thatcher.
The Moving Vietnam Wall is a replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. It’s formed by 140 panels, measuring a combined 375 feet long and 7.5 feet tall. It’s made of synthetic granite and is engraved with more than 58,000 names.
The wall will arrive in town Wednesday, June 9, for set up in H. Lyle Grant Thatcher Park, and will open to the public for free viewing June 10 through June 14. Viewing will be available 24 hours a day thanks to LED lighting.
To volunteer, call Chris Gibbs at 928-322-0704 or e-mail sheomomu@hotmail.com.
The other volunteer opportunity is with the Graham County Re-entry Project, which seeks to help those who have completed their time behind bars with getting identification and/or driver’s licenses, finding a place to live and helping those men and women seek employment. The purpose of Graham County Re-entry Project is to reduce recidivism.
A free community coach training class will take place Tuesday, June 15, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition’s House of Hope. To register, call 928-250-8396 or e-mail ken@gcsac.com.
