Transportation Board OKs funding for design of new Safford Airport terminal

SAFFORD — Safford Regional Airport-1LT Duane Spalsbury Field is one step closer to a new terminal building.

On Friday, it was announced the State Transportation Board approved the Arizona Department of Transportation five-year facilities construction plan, which includes airport projects.

Safford will receive $309,604 of federal aviation funds, and $15,198 from ADOT to cover half of the city’s match, which is another $15,198. The money will be allocated in fiscal year 2024-25 for design of a new terminal building.

The airport is also slated to receive $124,379 in federal aviation funds, and $6,105 from ADOT to cover half the city’s match for expansion of the airport’s access road. Again, the money is to be allocated in FY25.

Other area projects in the five-year construction plan include:

  • $4.4 million in FY25 to construct a 1.2-mile passing lane on U.S. Highway 70, in Bylas
  • $17.3 million in FY26 for five miles of pavement rehabilitation of U.S. Highway 70, between Reay Lane and 8th Street, in Safford and Thatcher
  • $4.5 million in FY26 to construct 1.5 miles of passing lanes on U.S. Highway 191, between Safford and Clifton
  • $20.7 million in FY28 for five miles of pavement rehabilitation on U.S. Highway 70, between Cottonwood Wash and Reay Lane, in Graham County
  • $500,000 in FY27 and $1.5 million in FY29 for Rattlesnake Bridge rehabilitation on U.S. Highway 191, near Three Way in Greenlee County
