Search and Rescue locates missing elderly man south of Safford

On June 22, 2022, at approximately 4:30 PM, Graham County Sheriff’s Office received a call for Search and Rescue assistance for a search of a missing elderly male starting at Highway 191, Mile Post 92.

Just south of the Graham County line a vehicle was found on the side of Highway 191 that was reported by a citizen to have been there for several hours.

A DPS Trooper in the area checked the vehicle and found it was related to a Silver Alert issued by the Tucson Police Department for a Michael Nichols, age 75, last known to be driving this vehicle, a silver 2011 Chevy HHR.  Michael Nichols was last seen on Monday and the Alert been issued in the morning hours of June 21, 2022.

Members of the Graham County Search and Rescue responded and at approximately 7:20 PM assisted in locating Michael Nichols approximately 1.5 miles east of Highway 191 in the range/desert area.

This was Cochise County’s operation and Graham County was in a support role.  Cochise County assumed care for Mr. Nichols’ medical needs due to exposure issues and contacting Tucson Police. As always, the Graham County Sheriff’s Office is very grateful for our dedicated Search and Rescue volunteers and their families and employers who support them when requested for such incidents, at all hours, who respond whenever they are called.
