Safford, Pima schools earns PBIS Awards

SAFFORD — Lafe Nelson Elementary School is one of the top schools when it comes to helping students manage their behaviors.

The Arizona PBIS Coalition announced its 2024-25 award winners, and Lafe Nelson School was named one of four schools statewide as a Model School award recipient. Lafe Nelson School also received the Level 4 Tiers 1, 2 and 3 award.

Pima Elementary School received a Level 2 Tier 1 award, while Safford’s Dorothy Stinson and Ruth Powell schools received Level 1 Installing awards.

PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support, and schools can be designated in one of three tiers:

  • Tier 1 focuses on teaching, modeling, and reinforcing positive social, emotional, and behavioral skills
  • Tier 2 targets interventions for students at risk of developing more serious behavioral problems before they escalate
  • Tier 3 is for schools with students who do not respond to Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions, and the students receive more intensive, individualized support to improve behavioral and academic outcomes

In a posting on the school district website, Pima Elementary Principal Diana Logan said the award recognizes the dedication of school staff.

Together, we are building a school culture that is more positive, proactive and supportive for all our students, so that they can be successful citizens and leaders of our nation,” Logan wrote.
