BONITA — The building containing an office for a hemp-growing operation in southern Graham County was lost to fire just before the holiday.

Graham County Sheriff’s deputies were called out to the fire at 1:49 a.m. Monday, July 3. A metal building on South Brookerson Road was fully engulfed and it took the combined efforts of Willcox and Safford Fire departments to extinguish the blaze.

A neighbor said the building was vacant, and owned by someone out-of-state.

Safford Fire officials said the fire may have been started by a machine inside the structure that was left running and overheated. There did not appear to be any foul play.

The hemp is grown in nearby greenhouses and was not impacted by the fire.
