Loan scams, identity theft hits the Gila Valley

SAFFORD — Over the past few weeks Graham County Sheriff’s deputies have been taking calls about fraud.

One person said he believed he was the victim of a loan scam called Planet Finance, which sent him $980 of a supposed $5,000 loan, then asking the victim to remove the money from his account and return it to the “lender.”

He reported the issue to his bank, which put a freeze on his account until he filed a report with law enforcement.

Another person said she believed she was the victim of identity theft.

She said she checked her credit report and saw three new accounts opened with her social security number, accounts she had not opened.

The woman said she closed the accounts immediately and deputies gave her an identity theft packet. She was also instructed to report the incident to the FBI Cyber Crimes Unit.
