Chitty fire starts in northern Greenlee County, Rocky fire starts in Peridot

CLIFTON — A small wildfire was discovered Wednesday in the Clifton Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest.

The Chitty fire is at one acre and is located about one mile west of the Blue Vista Overlook.

The fire is in rugged, inaccessible terrain in the Chitty Canyon, and firefighters are taking a monitoring position. Smoke may be visible on U.S. Highway 191.

Cause is believed to be a lightning strike.

On Thursday, the Rocky fire was discovered about 15 miles northeast of Peridot.

Size was at 15 acres as of 2 p.m. Thursday and cause has not yet been determined.

It’s the third wildfire in the Peridot area this month. The 1,778-acre Toyo fire was discovered May 10, and the 60-acre Gopher fire was discovered May 18.
