SAFFORD — Graham County Health Department is resuming gleaning this month.

“Gleaning is when we get excess produce from the Arizona Food Bank, and we’re able to distribute it out to communities,” said Rosa Contreras, Health Program coordinator.

Gleaning is the distribution of perishable food items, such as fruits, vegetables and breads.

Communities includes churches, day care centers, schools and even neighborhoods. There are no age or income requirements to receive items from a gleaning.

The Health Department is looking for more communities of shared interest to participate, with the only requirement the community pick up items from the Health Department and facilitate distribution.

The next gleaning is Oct. 19 and to participate call the Health Department at 928-792-5368.
