‘Cybersecurity incident’ affects Freeport employees’ pay

MORENCI — Computer problems are creating payroll issues for Freeport-McMoRan employees.

Freeport employees were updated Thursday, Aug. 17, that due to ongoing system issues, their Aug. 18 pay would be the same as the previous pay period, regardless of the actual hours worked during the current pay period.

“Once our systems have been restored, payroll records will be reconciled based on actual time worked (including all time card swipes) and other applicable adjustments. Any necessary adjustments to pay — shortages or overages — will then be made,” the memo to employees reads.

On Friday, Aug. 11, Freeport announced it was targeted in a “cybersecurity incident affecting its information systems.”

“To date, there has been limited impact on production. Transitional solutions are being planned and implemented to secure information systems as quickly as possible. FCX continues to prioritize safety and responsible production practices. A prolonged disruption could impact future operations,” the statement on Freeport’s website reads, adding the company is “working with third party experts and law enforcement” on the matter.

Gila Valley Central’s request for further comment from Freeport and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency division of the Department of Homeland Security were not immediately returned.
