BOWIE — A crash on Interstate 10 at milepost 354, involving two trucks, resulted in one person dead and another with life-threatening injuries.

Arizona Department of Public Safety reports the crash occurred at about 7:23 a.m. Tuesday, when the lone driver of tractor-trailer carrying ammonia gas in liquid form “suffered a medical emergency,” causing him to lose control of his vehicle, and strike a box truck.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the box truck was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the box truck’s passenger was pronounced dead at a Phoenix hospital.

Names of the victims have not yet been released.

Due to the spill of the hazardous material, eastbound I-10 was closed and eastbound traffic re-rerouted north on U.S. Highway 191 to eastbound U.S. Highway 70 through Safford, Duncan and Lordsburg, N.M., before connecting again to the I-10.

Eastbound I-10 was expected to re-open between 9 and 11 p.m.
