Car show, dinner/dance announced for Hispanic Heritage Month

THATCHER — Eastern Arizona Hispanic Heritage Corporation announced the dates for the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in the Gila Valley.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, the reading of the proclamation will take place at the Lee Little Theater at Eastern Arizona College. There will be music, representatives from the Governor’s Office and the guest speaker will be Morenci teacher Gilbert Mesa. The ceremony will take place from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and admission is free.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, there will be two events. Starting at 10 a.m., on the south campus of EAC, McCabe Productions will put on the second annual Hispanic Heritage Car and Bike Show. Admission is free.

That same evening, the annual dinner and show will take place in EAC’s Hoopes Activity Center. The event features traditional music, dancing, as well as live and silent auctions. Tickets are $65 each.

Currently, Hispanic Heritage is raffling off a smoker donated by Tractor Supply. Tickets are $20 each or six for $100.

All proceeds from the events and raffles are used to fund scholarships to Eastern Arizona College, distributed through the EAC Foundation.

“We’re well over $50,000 (donated thus far),” said Hispanic Heritage Secretary/Treasurer Lupe Munoz. “Last year we donated $12,000.”
