For the first time this year, high school basketball teams know where they rank in the official AIA power point rankings. The rankings were released for all 6 classifications.
There was some mild shock and surprised looks when the rankings were seen for the first time. Most people assume that the MaxPreps rankings that have been compiled during the season are the same as the AIA rankings.. That is only partially true. MaxPreps uses every game in their formula. AIA only uses non-tournament games in their formula.
The top ranked team on the boys side is the Pima Roughriders who come in at #2 in 2A. Thatcher will have some work to do as they come in as #20 in 2A, Willcox 39 and Morenci 46th.
Safford boys are 31st in 3A. Fort Thomas is 5th and Duncan 12th in 1A.
On the girls side, San Carlos is #2 in 2A followed directly by Pima at #3. Morenci sits 12th, Thatcher 19th.
Safford girls are 26th in 3A. Fort Thomas is 6th and Duncan 24th in 1A.
These rankings will no doubt change on a daily basis but now teams know where they are as they look towards the state playoffs that begin mid February. Which is only about 5 1/2 weeks from now.
