THATCHER — Families can get a hands-on look at real-life applications of science this weekend at EAC’s local campuses.
The annual Eastern Arizona College Health and STEAM Festival is open to the public Friday and Saturday.
Friday things kick-off at EAC’s Discovery Park Campus.
“Friday, from 4-8 p.m., we have about 24 to 26 hands-on activities,” said Discovery Park Director Paul Anger. “It’s from pre-kindergarten to grandparents that can all participate and have fun.”
Activities include demonstrations with the Van der Graaf generator, Safford Library and Freeport-McMoRan will demonstrate owl pellets, the Star Lab Planetarium will be open as well as the telescope in the Gov Aker Observatory.
On Saturday, activities shift to the Thatcher Campus, starting at 8 a.m. with the Go Gold 1-mile and 5K Color Runs to benefit Nathaniel’s Childhood Cancer Foundation and Marcus Cortez Leon.
After the run, activities will take place throughout the campus, including the Freeport simulator.
“If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like driving one of those giant haul trucks, that’s what that’s all about,” said Dean of Students Dr. Gary Sorensen.
There will also be health screenings, activities in the Allied Health and STEAM building, tours of the college’s health and science classrooms and more.
Plus food trucks will be on campus, including Auntie Hua’s Waffle Truck, Bee’s Kitchen, Meg’s Place, J&J’s Kettlecorn Express and Mike’s Shiver Shack.
All activities across both campuses are free.
