SAFFORD — The annual Valentine’s Day Dance for those with special needs continues to grow.

“I can’t imagine it getting any better than this year,” said organizer Donna McGaughey.

Put on each year by the GFWC Woman’s Club of Safford, the club hosted special needs children from area schools in the morning, and special needs adults served by Blake Foundation and Great Communities Resource Center (GCRC) in the afternoon.

Each group was presented with a free gift, a special photo, light snacks and plenty of dancing for every attendee.

For the second year in a row, the dance was held at its new home — The Venue on Main.

“A good friend of mine, Kym Gifford (owner of Then Venue and Vignette on Main) offered it to us,” McGaughey said. “The Woman’s Club sponsors this, but it’s a smaller facility, and (at The Venue) we have more places to have people spread out.”

In addition Woman’s Club members, volunteers helping dance and serve food came from the Safford Rotary Club, staff of Eastern Arizona College, the Graham County Chamber of Commerce, and residents who wished to help.

Staging the dance is an annual tradition for the Woman’s Club that started in 2007. However, the club put the dance on hiatus in 2021 due to COVID-19.
