THATCHER – Athletically-minded Pioneer Days festival goers started the Saturday events with a bang as 71 people participated in the third annual 1-mile fun run and 5-K.
The 1-mile fun run, mainly filled with children, started things off briskly at 7 a.m. Racers dashed from the Thatcher High School parking lot and down Church Street. Afterward, everyone was cooled off by the Thatcher Fire Department.
The 5-K began shortly after the fun run, with some running competitively and others just enjoying the stroll. Individuals walking ended the race in about an hour, while the winners completed in less than 20 minutes.
Kenny Gowin seized first place with a time of 19.38. Gowin is a Safford high school student.
Adriano Payton took second place with a time of 19.44. He is a Thatcher High School graduate.
All proceeds gathered from the fun run and 5-K will benefit the Thatcher High School scholarship program.
