PIMA — Youth soccer in Pima is getting a big upgrade, thanks to the United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties.

United Way representatives presented the Pima Town Council with a grant for $200,000 for improvements to the town’s Carson Brown Soccer Fields, with the goal of starting high school boys and girls soccer programs.

The Town Council has appointed a committee to address the fields, including MiQuel McRea, Deanna Batty, Josh Benson, Jason Brimhall, Travis Hawkins, Tommy Nicholas, Mayor Dale Rogers, Councilman Lucas Hoopes and Town Manager Vernon Batty.

“We’ve had one meeting so far, we have another meeting planned for next Tuesday (April 19),” Vernon Batty said. “At that meeting we decided the first thing is to have it master-planned, so we didn’t just start building stuff randomly.”

The fields are located on 80 acres of BLM land that the town may use for parks and recreation, so the master plan will include multiple future recreation uses.

Batty said one of the first improvements will be leveling the ground as well as installing sprinklers. The fields are currently flood irrigated, which limits use.

The council also unanimously agreed to contribute a $500 sponsorship for the upcoming United Way of Graham and Greenlee Counties’ annual fund-raising golf tournament.
