SILVER CITY, N.M. — The smoky haze covering the Gila Valley won’t likely go away anytime soon.

The Trout fire, just north of Silver City, N.M., is at 44,570 acres and just 11-percent containment. And meteorologist Tom Bird said weather conditions over the next few days could hamper fire-fighting efforts.

“The conditions that we’re looking at — for either sky conditions, temperatures, relative humidity, winds, chances of rain and storms — their either critical or extreme. Meaning it’s not very favorable for fighting a fire,” Bird said during the Trout fire daily briefing Friday.

Grant County, N.M., which borders Greenlee County, is under an Air Quality Alert through the weekend, especially the areas downstream of the fire.

The Trout fire was first discovered June 12 and is one of two burning in Gila National Forest. The other, the Buck fire in Catron County, is at 57,754 acres and 71-percent containment.
