THATCHER — On a windy October night at John Mickelson Field, the Thatcher Eagles did what good teams do in late October — they took care of business. It wasn’t flashy, it wasn’t frantic, but it was final: Thatcher 40, Sabino 0. A shutout, a statement, and a region title clinched on Senior Night.
On the opening drive, senior Ryan Jones broke through for a 20-yard touchdown run. Moments later, Jackson Bryce scooped up a Sabino fumble and rumbled 20 yards for another score. By the time Chad Johnson found Hudson Conrad for a 31-yard strike late in the first quarter, it was 19-0, and Sabino was chasing shadows.
From there, Thatcher settled into its rhythm — sturdy defense, controlled tempo, and a line of scrimmage owned in green and white. Josiah Matagaono added touchdown runs of 9 and 42 yards, and Johnson punched in another from 17 yards out as the Eagles methodically closed out the night.
Thatcher’s offense finished with 344 total yards — 224 on the ground and 120 through the air — while the defense held Sabino’s sophomore quarterback Bodhi Sanford to 9-of-26 passing for 110 yards and an interception. The Sabercats managed just 155 total yards.
No drama. No doubt. Just the kind of efficient performance you expect from a team with its eyes on November. “We want to be sharper,” said head coach Dan Jones, “but you can’t be too unhappy about a shutout and a region title.”
The win moves Thatcher to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the 3A East, securing the region crown and another addition to the trophy case. The Eagles close the regular season next week at Coolidge — but for now, Senior Night in Thatcher belonged to a group of players who made winning look routine.
