WILLCOX — A suspect who reportedly fired a weapon at a Willcox Police officer is in custody.

The incident occurred Thursday, Nov. 3, near Fort Grant and High Desert roads. The suspect, identified as Randy Ray Brown, 67, of Willcox, failed to yield to police and fired on officers before driving off. During the attempted escape, the suspect crashed his vehicle into a home, causing a fire.

Brown fled on foot and the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office put out an AlertSense message to area homeowners to secure their dwellings and report any suspicious activity they witness.

At 7:15 p.m., with the aid of CCSO SWAT, Brown was located and efforts were underway to make contact for surrender. At 9:50 p.m., Brown was taken into custody.

“No officers seriously injured, excluding scrapes and cuts from running through the desert,” Willcox Police Chief Dale Hadfield said.

Brown was booked into Cochise County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, attempted homicide, criminal damage and various traffic offenses. Additional charges are pending.

Investigation into the incident by the Critical Incident Response Team is ongoing.
