THATCHER — More than 500 backpacks were made available Saturday to students in Graham and Greenlee schools, courtesy of the Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition.

Parents and children lined up around the Academics Program Building on the campus of Eastern Arizona College in the rain on Saturday, to take part in the 17th annual Back-to-School Resource Fair.

Backpacks were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Kathy Grimes, executive director for Graham County Substance Abuse Coalition, said any remaining backpacks will be made available to area schools for free distribution to any students who arrive on the first day of school without a backpack.

After receiving their backpack, students visited tables filled with volunteers from local service organizations, receiving school supplies such as pencils, notebooks, rulers and other items needed in the classroom.

Meanwhile parents were able to obtain information about services available to children and families from numerous providers in the Gila Valley.

In addition, parents were able to receive vouchers for free clothing for their children from GCRC, St. Vincent DePaul and Angel’s Closet.
