SAFFORD — St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church is getting its kitchen ready for one of the most popular attractions in the Gila Valley — the burro sale at the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

This year’s event will take place Saturday, May 4, starting at 10 a.m. with the Cinco de Mayo Parade down Safford’s Main Street, traveling east from the Graham County Courthouse to Central Avenue, then north to the church.

Entries in the parade are still being accepted; call 928-965-9116. The top three entries will be awarded $100 each.

At the church, the Estrella Jalisco beer garden and car show will open at 11 a.m., along with activities for the kids, art and craft vendors, and food vendors.

Entertainment will run throughout the day, headlined by Penumbra Mariachis, who will take the stage at 11:30 a.m.

Cinco de May celebrates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, it has evolved into a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations.
