SAFFORD — Political signs are starting to be placed around the Gila Valley, and the City of Safford is reminding candidates they have to check on utility lines before installation.

Arizona state law requires that anyone performing an excavation must contact the one-call center at least two days before work begins. State law includes digging holes and driving stakes into the ground under the definition of excavation.

To stay in compliance, candidates should call the Arizona Blue Stake Center at 811 two days before signs are placed.

Failure to do so can carry a fine of up to $5,000 per incident. Enforcement is by the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Early voting for the July 30 Arizona Primary starts July 3. Last day to register to vote or change political affiliation is July 1.
