SAFFORD — One of the area’s primary sources for helping people in need is asking for help.

St. Vincent DePaul Society is seeking board members to help the nonprofit fulfill its mission of serving the community.

Current board members have served more than 17 years and are retiring. Needed is board president, vice president, secretary and treasurer. Experience is helpful but not required.

St. Vincent DePaul Society operates a food bank that provides food and bread items once a month. It also operates a thrift store with clothing, furniture, books, household appliances and more; and provides rent and utility assistance on a limited, emergency basis when resources are available.

Applications to volunteer can be obtained at the food pantry, 221 E. Main St., in Safford.

St. Vincent De Paul Society is one of four area food banks in the Gila Valley. Eastern Arizona College offers a food pantry for its students who find themselves in short-term need, and Safford schools offer the Bulldog Pantry, which provides food for students in need to take home for the weekend.

The area’s other food bank that serves the general population, Our Neighbor’s Farm and Pantry, also put out a call for volunteers in both the pantry and the garden.
