Science Teachers to Learn New Science Standards at ASTA Conference

The Arizona State Board of Education adopted the AZ  Science Standards with recommendations from the Arizona Science Teachers Association (ASTA) on Monday, October 22nd. With adoption of science standards, the ASTA Annual Conference, Building Toward Phenomenal Science Instruction for All, will begin providing a foundation for teachers, coaches, and curriculum directors in implementing new standards utilizing the 3-dimensions of instruction.

The annual conference of the Arizona Science Teachers Association, Building Toward Phenomenal Science Instruction for All  will be held on Thursday, November 1st and Friday, November 2nd at The Falls Event Center. The two day event will be focused on researched-based instructional practices for science.  Click here for overview of schedule.

On Thursday, participants will join Lacey Wieser, former ADE STEM and Science Director, Jen Gutierrez, NSTA Director, and Rebecca Garelli, Teacher Leader, for an in-depth day of learning.  Attendees will deepen their understanding of phenomena and its use in 3-dimensional science instruction while promoting scientific discourse. Grade-band sessions will occur in the afternoon followed by the ASTA Celebration Social.

Friday’s sessions will kick-off with a keynote presentation, Learning and the Brain,  by Michael DiSpezio. Michael is a renaissance educator, speaker, and author. A former marine biologist, Michael completed his graduate studies at the Marine Biological Lab at Woods Hole and worked as a research assistant to a Nobel prize winner. Leaving the laboratory, he celebrated his passion in education as a K-12 classroom teacher for nearly ten years. His understanding of natural sciences has resulted in numerous publications and speaking engagements throughout the world on an assortment of scientific topics that range from learning and the brain to re-engineering the 21st century science classroom.

Following Michael’s keynote, there will be 4 concurrent sessions that will include 6-8 one-hour workshop sessions based upon one of the three strands below.  To view the workshop sessions that will be offered, click here.
