San Carlos PD vehicle crash kills two

SAN CARLOS — A collision with an unmarked police vehicle making a U-turn on the highway resulted in the death of two Safford residents.

Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that, on Friday, Aug. 14, at 1:36 p.m., a San Carlos Apache Police officer in an unmarked vehicle was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 70 at milepost 264, when the officer attempted to make a U-turn.

A vehicle traveling eastbound collided with the right front corner of the police vehicle, causing the passenger vehicle to travel off the south side of the roadway.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, Susan Biggs, 74, of Safford, was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the crash. Her passenger, husband Thomas Biggs, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision caused the police vehicle to roll, coming to rest on its roof. The unidentified San Carlos Police officer was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

DPS reports investigation into the incident is ongoing.
