THATCHER — After a five-month lay-off, the Safford Lions Club is bringing back the PowWow.
“Borderlands Food, which is also a nonprofit, they get produce from Nogales, straight off the produce trucks, in a gleaned situation. And every first Saturday of the month, we get the benefit of part of that. The Safford Lions will give you approximately 70 pounds of veggies for a $12 donation,” said Safford Lions Club’s Chris Gibbs.
PowWow stands for Produce on Wheels Without Waste and is overseen by Borderlands Produce Rescue. The goal is to prevent excess produce from going to waste and the PowWow program saves about 32 million pounds of produce each year.
The local drive-through PowWow will take place Saturday, Nov. 6, in the parking lot of the Home Depot. The event starts at 7 a.m. and continues until 10 or until supplies run out.
