Safford extends winning streak to 4 with rout of Catalina

Safford Football poses in front of the warehouse they slept in at camp.

The distractions of homecoming week didn’t seem to slow down the Safford Bulldogs Friday night as they rolled their winning streak to 4 games as they beat Catalina 54-0.  In their winning streak Safford has only trailed twice(Show Low, Sahuarita).

Quarterback Jerrick Arbizo has been the straw that stirs the Bulldogs drink during the winning streak. Last week he rushed for 165 yards and 4 touchdowns. Friday he started the scoring with a 23 yard TD run with 7:39 remaining in the 1st quarter. His 5th touchdown in 5 quarters. Catalina answered with two big passes from Tra Daniels to TE Taibel Crucella that set up 1st and goal for the Trojans. Then Jerrick Arbizo happened. He stepped in front of the next Daniels pass on the goal line, picked it off and returned it for a 100 yard touchdown. The Bulldogs led 14-0 at that point.

Safford would add rushing touchdowns from Robert White, Sam Tobias, CJ Scrivner and a TD pass from Arbizo to Daniel Ollick all in the first half to take a commanding 47-0 halftime lead. The second half sped by as the mercy running clock was in affect. Safford would add a late TD as Homecoming King Emitt Post intercepted a batted ball and returned it 40 yards for the final Bulldog touchdown.

Sophomore, CJ Scrivner, had a breakout game. He had 8 carries for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns all in the first half. Most of the Bulldog starters didn’t play in the 2nd half.

Safford moves their record to 4-3. They will play at home next Thursday vs Tanque Verde.
