On October 4, 2018 at approximately 7:00 PM a call to Graham County Communications was received of an injury accident in the intersection of Powerline Road and Stockton Road, Safford.
Emergency personnel from Graham County Sheriff’s Office, Safford Police, Safford Fire Department, Department of Public Safety and Lifeline Ambulance responded to the scene. The collision involved a white Dodge pick-up truck and a Chevrolet compact car. Each vehicle had three occupants at the time of the accident. All six received injuries, varying in range of seriousness and were taken to Mt. Graham Hospital. The driver of the Chevrolet, Brianna Varnam (age 18 of Safford), was later pronounced deceased from her injuries. One of the passengers from the car was later flown to Tucson for his injuries.
Based on the investigation, it appears the Chevrolet car entered the intersection going east as the truck was travelling south on Powerline Road. There is a stop sign posted for east/west direction for Powerline Road.
The Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Safety working together will complete the investigation.
