SAFFORD — On Monday, the Safford City Council unanimously agreed to spend almost $500,000 for nearly 30 acres of land just north of Safford Cemetery.

“This land purchase would benefit the city for future extension of 26th Street to the east, and to recreation and cemetery expansion areas,” said Lance Henrie, Public Works director.

Total cost for the 29.63 acres being purchased from La Tierra development is $490,000 and is expected to be spent in next year’s budget, as closing is not expected to take place until after July 1.

However, if closing takes place sooner, Henrie said the money would be taken out of the city’s general fund reserves and contingency.
