Red Lamp RFPs due this week

THATCHER — During its most recent meeting, the Thatcher Town Council received an update on two major projects within the community — development of the Red Lamp commercial area and the recreation complex at 8th Street and Reay Lane.

Town Manager Heath Brown said requests for proposals for Red Lamp were due this week.

“We’ve had one proposal submitted already, and I met with another group today that seems very likely to submit,” Brown said.

To move forward as quickly as possible toward getting Red Lamp started, the Town Council agreed to hold a special meeting Feb. 7 to review the proposals and possibly award a contract.

Conceptual plans call for the 4.4 acres to be developed into a mixed-use feature of the town, with a number of two-story buildings that can house retail on the first floor and either residential housing or offices on the second.

The goal is to also have a number of indoor/outdoor features, such as cafes, as well as a number of art pieces and a pedestrian plaza.

As to the recreation complex, Brown explained that work is moving forward on the restrooms, which gave the town time to decide if playground equipment needed to move to a new location, to take advantage of the topography.

Forming a committee that involved residents as well as the mayor, it was decided to leave things as planned, but add a zip-line to the playground, as well as increase the size of the spider climber.

Meanwhile, the area planned for a dog park, below the playground area, will be left vacant in the event there is community demand for playground items such as hill slides.
