Pre-teen injured in ATV vs. car incident

GRAHAM COUNTY — Graham County Sheriff’s deputies recently found themselves dealing with a pair of motor vehicle accidents.

The first occurred Friday, Aug. 11, at about 6:30 p.m. when a semi truck carrying molten sulfur crossed the 8th Avenue Bridge and had a tire blow out.

The truck did not spill its load, but the driver pulled to the far right onto rain-softened ground, which caused the truck to sink and lean in an unsafe manner, precipitating the closure of 8th Avenue for an hour and 15 minutes.

On Saturday, Aug. 12, at about 2:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the area of East Roper Lake and South Stockton roads for a two-vehicle collision.

According to reports, an ATV driven by a 12-year-old female was eastbound on Roper Lake Road and failed to stop at the Stockton Road intersection, colliding with a four-door sedan.

The ATV rider, who was wearing a helmet, was knocked to ground and sustained a broken ankle and lost tooth, and was transported to Mount Graham Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The mother of the ATV rider said her daughter was staying at a friend’s house and did not have permission to operate an ATV.

No citations were issued.
