Plans continue to make Fourth of July a countywide celebration

PIMA — More details are coming out about the plans to celebrate the Fourth of July in the Gila Valley this year.

Graham County is spearheading the effort, in honor of America’s 250th birthday, and during the Pima Town Council meeting this week, Graham County Supervisor John Howard said the communities are working together to figure out the logistics.

The current plans are to hold a breakfast for everyone in the Gila Valley in Pima, followed by activities in Thatcher, such as children playing under the Fire Department hoses, then the parade down Safford’s Main Street.

The day would finish with a free concert and a fireworks show at Graham County Fairgrounds. Howard said the county has been in talks with Country Music recording artist Avery Anna, a Flagstaff native who has deep ties to the Gila Valley.

“There’s a chance of her, but if not her there are others,” Howard said. “We just thought it’d be a great community event. We’re all working together to have a really neat, good time and give the community what they deserve.”

Traditional Fourth of July activities specific to each community — such as free admission to the Pima Pool and the Thatcher Fire Department waking the community with sirens — would also continue.
