Pima girls #1 in first power point rankings

The Pima Girls Basketball team is 9-0 and have won every game by at least 19 points. In fact, they are winning by an average of 25 points per game. That effort has earned the the #1 spot in the 2A Power Points rankings that were released on Thursday.

If the Riders are able to hold on to that ranking all season, they will get to host any playoff game through the semi-finals.

The boys squad is just as impressive this season for Pima. They are 7-1 on the season and #3 in the rankings, with their lone loss coming to 1A St. David on the road. Pima uses their impressive height advantage to outrebound and outscore opponents in the paint. The Riders have 5 players at least 6’4 on the roster.

THATCHER HIGH

Thatcher girls hoops won the 2A State Championship last year before making the move up to 3A this season. They come in at #6 in the first rankings with a 6-2 record. They beat 2A #3 Round Valley last night and should at least stay put, if not move up in next week’s rankings.

The boys team have settled in with new coach Kyle Hull after a 1-4 start. They sit at 4-5 after a 16 point win over Round Valley last night. They sit in the 16th spot coming into this week.

Both soccer teams got big wins over Safford yesterday. The girls squad was #17 going into the game with #9 Safford and should move up after the 3-2 overtime win.

The boys soccer team sits in the #9 spot and with the 4-1 win over #26 Safford yesterday should stay put.

SAFFORD HIGH

Girls basketball earned a big 50-44 win last night at Sabino to move over the .500 mark at 5-4. They have won 3 straight.

Boys hoops comes in at #21. They are 1-6 on the season and will host Miami tonight.

Girls Soccer is 2-1-1 on the season and are #9 in the opening rankings. They will host Coolidge on February 16th.

Boys Soccer is #26 in the rankings with a 1-4 record this season and will also host Coolidge on February 16th.

FORT THOMAS HIGH

Lee Haws’ girls team enters the first poll at #2. They are 8-2 on the season and will travel to Round Valley today to take on St. Michael.

Fort Thomas Boys graduated their entire starting line-up from last year’s 1A State Championship team and are still trying to find the right combination. They are 3-6 on the season and #19 in the rankings.
