SAN CARLOS — The San Carlos Apache Tribal Council voted unanimously to limit the size of gatherings at individual residences and enact a curfew for tribal members under 18 years old.
The Unruly Gatherings and Special Events Ordinance is the result of shootings at two graduation parties at private residences in June, one of which resulted in the death of Dezirea Nichole Harney, 16.
The ordinance requires that any gathering of 75 people or more requires a permit, and can only be held at a district community facility, where attendees could be searched for weapons, drugs and/or alcohol.
In addition, all minors have a curfew of 10 p.m., and adults may not supply or permit the consumption of alcohol by minors even in the adults’ residence.
The San Carlos Apache Police Department also announced it was hosting a regional DUI task force over the holiday weekend.
The department is partnering with other regional agencies to remove impaired drivers from behind the wheel.
