Naomi Jane Sigman, of Safford, entered into eternal life early Saturday morning, June 22, 2024, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was 86.
Naomi Jane Sigman, also known as “Janie,” was born March 2,1938, in Bakersfield, California, to George S. Callison and Eva Elouise Smithson. She was the 5th out of 6 children. She attended school up until the 5th grade in Bel Garden, California. In 1943 she moved to Provo, Utah with her dad, and brother Scottie. She picked cotton until she moved back to California in 1945 with her mother Eva. She got a job babysitting Buck Owens’ children when she was around 14 or 15 years old.
She played the acoustic bass, knew how to yoddle and also played and sang in bands. She took 1st place and won in a singing contest and got the opportunity to go on tour and sing with Ray Charles and Roy Clark in California. In 1958 she met the love of her life, Leroy Lee Sigman, also known as “Joe,” in Fillmore, California. They had 4 amazing children, Phillip C. Tow (Judi), Anita L. Sigman, Patricia L. Sigman (Terry) and Lorena Sigman-Heck(Billy).
In 1967, they moved their family to Anchorage, Alaska, where they resided for 1 year while her husband worked on the offshore oil rigs. In 1968, she became ill and moved her family to Safford, Arizona, where her mother took care of her until she got better. This is where she became a cook at the Road Runner Steak House and the Pioneer and became well-known for her steaks, prime ribs, beans and salad bars until her husband, Joe, became very ill and she stayed right by his side until he was in better health.
One of her favorite past time hobbies included quarters and machines. She also loved to crochet, play darts which she won a trophy for, cook and take care of her family. Most of all she loved to dance. Janie had many people who loved her including not just her kids but her 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Leroy Lee Sigman; her mom and dad; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; and 1 grandson, Dustin M. Owens.
Janie was the grandma to go to when the grandchildren got in trouble, she put them under her wing and made them feel safe but most importantly always made sure that they were loved. Her beautiful smile, out going personality and comfort will be missed beyond what words can describe.
Funeral services for Janie were conducted Friday, June 28, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., at Vining Funeral Homes “Chapel of the Valley,” by Bishop Jonathon Stailey of the Artesia Ward. Concluding services followed in the Lebanon Cemetery.
